Our Story

Stoneford Spirit began in 2004, not as a grand ambition, but as a natural extension of what a Yorkshire farming family had been doing for generations: working with grain. When our farm's original grain stores were converted into a distillery, it marked a shift from growing barley to transforming it; moving from one kind of patience to another.

Name

Stoneford takes its name from the old stone ford crossing the River Calder, a landmark on our original farm property. For generations, it marked where the lane met the water; an ordinary feature that became a meeting point, a reference for directions, eventually shorthand for the place itself.

Founders

Three generations of the same family now work across the operation: the grandfather who converted the grain stores, his daughter who manages distillation and blending and her son who handles cask selection and maturation. It's not romantic; it's practical succession built on shared standards and deep familiarity with every step of the process.

Location

The distillery draws endless inspiration from its surroundings ; the rugged coastline, wild hedgerows and salt-kissed Cornish air that define the region's character.

Our Process

Craft

The copper stills were commissioned from Scotland in 2003, built to specifications developed through months of consultation with retired distillery engineers. Our goal wasn't innovation; it was clarity. Each still is designed to strip away harsh volatiles while preserving the rich, cereal-forward character that defines the house style.

Water & Ingredients

Natural limestone spring water drawn from beneath the Pennine hills, barley grown on Yorkshire farmland for full traceability and carefully selected ex-bourbon, oloroso sherry, and locally seasoned oak casks. Each element is chosen not just for flavour, but for the story it tells about Yorkshire's landscape and heritage. By combining these elements, we create a balanced profile: warm honey, dried fruits, roasted nuts and a touch of Yorkshire character.

Production Capacity

Production operates in weekly cycles, with distillation, casking and bottling all handled on-site. Annual output sits around 25,000 bottles across the core range, though exact numbers vary depending on cask yields and maturation decisions. Bottling happens in small runs (typically 300-500 bottles at a time) allowing for batch-specific quality checks and label accuracy.
